A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Importance Of Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-educational high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already secured a reputation as a teacher with teaching methods that inspired and encouraged students to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Friday morning at 8:00 she addressed the pupils in her class and stated the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and explicit standpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will absolutely confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the greater the possibility that he or she is an alcohol addicted person."
Miss Jackson then informed the students in the class that each individual would be held responsible for investigating two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class by way of a thirty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the students in her class that after she reviews the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her class to go over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For example, almost every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be precise, "Do you feel unusually ill when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed her pupils why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the principal difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
Primarily this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the person who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to recognize the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and encouraged the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a critical health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
