A Young Gentleman Requires Treatment For His Acute Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcohol Dependency

Nearly eight months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-seven-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences extreme depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship problems.

As declared by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in essence has no driving force to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished five semesters of graduate school in theology.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can look within and see his drinking problems and chemical dependency and do something healthy about these difficulties. Or, on the other hand, if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol addiction treatment that results in long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug dependency. First of all, there are several recently discovered doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to concede the fact that there is utterly nothing healthy about drug addiction and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, therapy for his relationship issues and his depression might help him deal with these psychological difficulties more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Because Benjamin doesn't have the drive to achieve much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he desperately needs a little hope for a more productive lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his intense depression and dependency and continue with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't realize this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the counseling he requires for his extreme depression, he can reorient his life and begin living with passion, self-respect, and direction.

More solid relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to get the professional rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a healthy and sober manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
