A Young Gentleman's Thoughtless Drinking Leads To A DUI And Time In The Local Jail
Richard had a particularly difficult time keeping a job. In truth, due to his laziness and lack of motivation, he was unemployed far more frequently than he was gainfully employed. And when he did secure a job, he had a particularly difficult time getting to work on time, he frequently received poor performance evaluations, and he called off sick so frequently that he usually got fired a few weeks after he began working.
To no one's amazement, one of the effects of Richard's terrible employment history was the fact that he was virtually broke much of the time. In spite of Richard's less than passing employment record and financial mismanagement, nevertheless, one way or another he managed to drink irresponsibly much of the time.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a fifth DWI. When he went before the court, the magistrate stated to Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was terrible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve nine months in the local jail.
During his time in the county jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcohol abuse facts such as alcohol related consequence and alcohol deaths, about the disruptive consequences of abusive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The magistrate stressed the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol treatment and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will more likely than not be spending a lot more time in jail.
Richard stated that he grasped what the magistrate was saying but he still asserted that incarceration was not the appropriate response. The judge disagreed and proclaimed that it was his professional job to keep alcohol dependent persons off the streets who drive and drink and who get one or more DUIs. To substantiate this perspective, the judge quoted some venerable, highly evaluated alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse statistics that stressed some of the adverse consequences that are associated with abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard realized that he drank in an irresponsible and hazardous manner, he never believed that he was alcohol dependent. So it was quite a surprise when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms around two hours after getting locked up in jail.
To treat his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner, Richard was life flighted to a rehabilitation facility for alcohol detox and then returned to jail. While in jail Richard received alcohol counseling but due to the fact that he received this rehabilitation as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his hazardous drinking.
When his time in jail was completed, the judge without wavering announced to Richard that he would be under stringent observation and would be mandated to take periodic urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he reluctantly followed the treatment protocol while in the county jail, the magistrate knew that it was simply a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.
As the judge reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some people never "connect the dots" and learn how to live in an adult and responsible manner.
